Two Thousand & Eight

It has been a massive year for music and a year where I have listened to more albums then I thought possible. In the same vein as my Top 15 Albums of 2007 you will find below my subjective Top 25 Albums of 2008.

Top 25 Albums of 2008

25. Shameboy – Heartcore

Starting the countdown are Belgium electro thumpers Shameboy who I only became aware of after they played the set before Soulwax at the festival I visited in Belgium earlier in the year.
Definitely the most electronic act to make my list – this is true pounding electro music.

Shameboy – Heartcore
Shameboy – Splendit

24. Fujiya and Miyagi – Transparent Things

I am desperate to see these guys live and rumours are they are coming to Australia around March. I only got into their first CD this year and although ‘Transparent Things’ was better then the first the fact that the sound was so similar to the iis why it is not further up the list.

Fujiya And Miyagi – Knickerbocker
Fujiya and Miyagi – Pickpocket

23. Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree

As you might know from reading this blog I do not listen to one genre of music and I believe that you should have a range of good albums for all moods and situations. Goldfrapp’s ‘Seventh Tree’ managed a lot of listens from me this year due to the fact that it was perfect for all those situations where you do not feel like drowning in distortion. Due to a few reasons but mainly my stupidity on the night I missed them at Parklife – I am still hating myself for this.

Goldfrapp – A & E
Goldfrapp – Happiness

22. Neon Neon – Stainless Style

This was probably one of the most diverse albums I heard all year and it really stood out at the time. The diversity of the album meant that there were tracks that hit me perfectly and tracks that failed to come close – an album that was able to hit me in all places would have scored much higher on my list.

Neon Neon – I Told Her On Alderaan
Neon Neon – Raquel

21. These New Puritans – Beat Pyramid

I had actually almost forgotten about These New Puritans until I composed this list. I was heavily into their album at the start of the year but it really seemed to drop off my radar for whatever reason. If it was released in the last couple of months it would have climb much higher.

Ok I just went looking for the album so I could play a song and remember what they sounded like and realised that it is no longer in my library – must have been lost in the crash of my hard drive earlier in the year. Now that explains why I have forgotten about them.

These New Puritans – Swords Of Truth

20. Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream

What a great year it was for the Aussies with 5 albums making my top 25 and I am sure at least a couple making just about everyone else’s. Empire Of The Sun were quite a surprise pack in the current year finding immediate commercial success with a few great productions. However the reason why they are so far down my list is that although there are a few tracks which would be in the top 10 of the year others are so far off that as a whole the album is not that great – similar to MGMT for me.

Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream
Empire Of The Sun – We Are The People

19. Friendly Fires – Friendly Fires

I really thought that Friendly Fires would land further up my list then this as I was anticipiating their album all year from listening to their EP’s however for some reason I just never got obsessed enough with it – I guess that from here the albums below start to really become ones I listened to heaps!!! – I would love to see these guys live so hopefully next year.

Friendly Fires – Paris
Friendly Fires – On Board

18. The Faint – Fascination

I must say it is a little disappointing to see The Faint this far down my top 25 as ‘Wet From Birth’ would have been in the top 5 if it had been released this year. Not a bad album by any means just far from my expectations. Their show at The Zoo this year was definitely one of the best I saw all year

The Faint – The Geeks Were Right
The Faint – Get Suduced

17. Late Of The Pier – Fantasy Black Channel

Well it is a little disappointing that these boys are in the country at the moment but are not making it up to Brisbane. Erol made a slight habit this year of taking indie bands with energy and producing flawless albums. I am really looking forward to hearing what the young guys can do next.

16. Hercules and Love Affaire – Hercules and Love Affaire

Well in the resurgence of disco in 2008 there was one label DFA at the top of it all and one of their prodigies Hercules and Love Affaire showing everyone how to do it live. The production genius of Andy Butler teamed with what only could be described as some sort of mardi gra toured the world conquering venues and festivals all over with their blend of octave bass, horns, disco vibes and transvestites. I was lucky enough to come across this show twice in the year – once in Belgium and more recently at Modular’s Nevereverland festival with both times blowing me away with fun.

15. MGMT – Oracular Spectacular (Disqualified)

I had to go back to my original post to get the mp3 links for MGMT album when I saw that I had posted about them in February this year after first hearing their album. I then started to wonder if their album had actually even been released this year when a Google search enlightened me to the fact that it was released in October 2007. It seems that the mass hype about them over the last 6 months has made everyone including myself forget about how long this album has actually been out. MGMT you are disqualified from my top 25 of 2008 (half of the songs on the album are shit anyway).

MGMT – Time To Pretend

14. Does It Offend You Yeah? – You Don’t Know What You’re Getting Your Self Into
DOIYY the electro rockers that I was sure would crack my top ten! Now why then did they only come in at number 14?? Unfortunately I think it has come down to something which was completely out of their control and had absolutely nothing to do with the quality of their album. After looking forward to seeing them live for months at Parklife this year I was disgustingly disappointed at the 30 min low volume set they delivered – Now I do believe that this was because of;
1. The bass player had broken his leg so they could not play all their tracks and
2. Sound restrictions on the shitty stage they were put on.
It is strange how a crap live performance can bring an album down in my ears but somethings are just unexplained (The Teenagers did not even make my top 25 after their pathetic excuse for a live performance).

Does It Offend You, Yeah? – We Are Rockstars

13. The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur

The Cinematic Orchestra’s album, like Goldfrapp’s made it into my top 25 due to the fact that it is perfect for those occasions where something heavier is not needed. Its atmospheric sounds create a somewhat floating mood which is perfect for background music in those times where you are doing something else other than just listening to music. The vocal tracks on this album are amazing and it oozes emotion throughout. I know that this album will definitely be one that sticks with me next year.

12. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours

Seeing Cut Copy kill it at Nevereverland a couple of weekends ago reminded me of why I like them so much. I know a lot of people will probably put this album much higher then number 12 but all the albums from here down were just so good that only the slightest things set them apart. I really love how well “In Ghost Colours” is mixed and I am not sure if you can put that down to DFA’s Tim Goldworthy, frontman Dan Whitford or both but the album flows perfectly from one track to the next which makes it hard not to listen to the complete album every time.

11. Grafton Primary – Eon

I ended up writing a review about Grafton Primary’s album and their live show for Time Off magazine but never posted about it on this blog. I think it just slipped away from me but I am glad I get to talk about it now. Grafton Primary was probably one of the first bands I really started supporting on this blog due to my immediate love for them after their EP last year. The release of their new album this year really excited me and rightfully deserves its place so far up my personal ladder. The two songs I have posted below are absolute dance floor destroyers and any DJ who wants to be slightly original should grab them and start throwing them into their sets and watch what happens….

10. Hot Chip – Made In The Dark

It seems like so long ago that Hot Chip released ‘Made In The Dark’ but every time I play it I remember just how good these guys are. I saw them in Belgium this year and their set had improved 100% from the 2 other times I had seen them in Australia – this was mainly due to the fact that they were looking more like a band with front men rather then 5 geeks hiding behind keyboards. It was a great show and I am really looking forward to seeing them at The Big Day Out in January! – Welcome to my top 10.

9. Scenario Rock – Histrionics

I was so obsessed with Scenario Rock’s album at the start of the year that I thought it was a shoe in for my top 5 however I did not predict the quality of every album below to come after. I really enjoy albums that do not sound like everything else at the moment and Scenario Rock take their tracks and strip them back with amazing piano compositions which set the scene for track after track of witty pop brilliance. ‘Histrionics’ is one of my favourite tracks of the year – I have tried to push this track onto many people but noone I know yet seems to understand it – give it a go.

Scenario Rock – Perfect Love Antidote

8. The Shortwave Set – Harmonica

The Shortwave Set’s ‘Harmonica’ is currently the album which I am listening to the most. I am reading the book ‘Shantaram’ and I have been enjoying listening to the album at the same time and now every time I hear it I think of India. The standout of ‘Harmonica’ is definitely the vocal arrangements and melodies which are ideally fitted to the soft rock and electronic backgrounds to make a dangerously catchy combination. I posted the ‘Aeroplane remix’ of ‘Now Til 69′ in my last Derogatory Playlist and because of the catchy lyrics it is one of my favourite remixes of the year.

7. The Presets – Apocalypso

Well I never posted about The Presets album when it came out because I believed that it would not really need to be spoken about – I was right and I still do not need to say anything but I will still say; Thank you presets for all the good times, I look forward to seeing you again.

6. Cazals – What Of Our Future

As some of you may have realised by now I love my indie rock and it has been a great year for it. I can always find a time to listen to ‘What Of Our Future’ as it is such a fun and easy album to listen to. Like any good indie band the bass and drums work in tight competition with each other keeping the rhythm for the addition of smart guitar and vocals. Along with the others in my top 10 I have not seen live yet, Cazals is definitely up there – please come to Australia in 2009!

Download (right click save as);
Cazals – To Cut A Long Story Short
Cazals – Life Is Boring

5. Bloc Party – Intimacy

‘A Weekend in the City’ Managed to gain top spot in Derogatory’s prior years top 15 albums and I was thinking for a moment that Bloc Party could have done the double. After many listens I had to be honest to myself and admit that ‘Intimacy’ was not as good as its predecessors however another direction another fantastic fucking album. I am just so grateful that they decided to bring out ‘Intimacy’ this year as it meant an unforgettable performance at riverstage. I love you Bloc Party and I wait for what is next.

Bloc Party – Biko
Bloc Party – Trojan Horse

4. M83 – Saturdays = Youth

Layer and layer of perfection are smoothed gracefully over every part of M83’s sensational album ‘Saturdays = Youth’. Definitely the album after my ‘number 1’ I have listened to the most this year probably because of the fact it is able to suit so many moods from chill to dance at exactly the same time without even changing a beat. I recommend this album to everyone as I just can not understand how you could not like it.

Download (right click save as);
M83 – Skin Of The Night
M83 – Graveyard Girl

3. Foals – Antidote

Foals are the band who I am absolutely dying to see live as I believe that their set will produce a type of energy for the duration which would be unmatched by any indie band I am currently into. Their unique brand of indie rock grabbed me on first listen and I was so amazed at how such a strange mixture and arrangement of sounds could be so catchy. Their tracks must be influenced by the dance circles in big way as their use of instruments creates an irresistible temptation to get up and move every part of your body in time to each beat.

Foals – The French Open
Foals – Cassius

2. Jackson Jackson – Tools For Survival

Now I am not sure if you could find Jackson Jackson’s album on any other Blogs top 10 let alone at number 2 but the only reason behind this is that none of the other blogs you may read have given it a listen. ‘All Alone’ has gained massive air play here in Australia on the radio station Triple J which was a big cause behind the success of their previous album which if you loved you would most probably find it difficult to like ‘Tool For Survival’.

There have been stages over the last couple of months where I was seriously contemplating giving this album the number 1 spot as track after track on the album continued to produce this original sounding delight that I just could not get enough of. These are pop songs made with the edge of originality which will never get them recognised as pop itself and will keep it in the alternative section at your record store. The use of fat synthesisers and effects behind emotional falsettos and choir’s fuse a sound together which is so powerful you will feel the butterflies flow through your body with every kick of the bass drum.

Get the album, listen to it until you love it and then enjoy loving it.

1. Mystery Jets – 21

Well other then a few late challenges from my top 5 Mystery Jets have really planted their foot in the number 1 spot for most of the year. I must say that I think Mr Erol Alkan and his production genius has something to do with it but there is no doubt that this band deserves everything that has come to it. I was unbelievably lucky to see them at an intimate gig in Ibiza this year and I think it is fitting that they will be the first band I see in the New Year on the 1st of January in Melbourne. Other then the connection of Erol producing their album and the big synth on Hideaway, Mystery Jets are quite a distance away from dance music however through remixes and the respect Erol oozes in the community they have been widely accepted and loved which have massively helped their success.

Download (right click save as);
Mystery Jets – Hideaway
Mystery Jets – Young Love (Featuring Laura Marling)

Well that is it for another year but I must give an honourable mention (in no particular order) to the following albums that did not quite make the top 25 but which I thoroughly enjoyed over the year

Van She – V
Lindstrom – Where You Go I Go Too
TV On The Radio – Dear Science
Why? – Alopecia
Cold War Kids – Loyalty to Loyalty
The Teenagers (you fucked yourself with your live performance)
Hot Little Hands – Dynamite In Black And White
Kraak And Smaak – Plastic People
Ladytron – Velocifero
Lykke Li – Youth Novel
Metronomy – Nights Out
Morgan Geist – Doube Night Time
Primal Scream – Beautiful Future
The Kills – Midnight Bloom
The Whip – X Marks Destination
Pendulum – In Silico

Thanks to anyone and everyone who comes here and reads the content which I know can sometimes be a little strange. I hope I can continue to find time in the new year to dribble some shit and a lot of good music. If you disagree with any of my selections of the top 25 I would love to hear why and if you can suggest any other albums which did not get a mention I would love to listen to them if I have not already.

Thanks again and have a good new year.

Final Offensive Against Germany

Mystery Jets – 21

I could not wait any longer to bring you the new “Mystery Jets” album. I was highly anticipating its release the moment I found out that “Erol Alkan” was doing the production work on it and this anticipation built as I heard the “Switch” Remix of “Hideaway”. I still had not heard an original track off it until I played the whole album for the first time and as soon as I did I knew I was onto some thing very special. Two weeks and over 25 plays (according to my iTunes library) later this has to be my favourite album of 2008 so far.

The opening track “Hideaway” with its sirens and big distorted bass could deceive you electro heads into thinking that this album is going to be very different to what it actually is. This is an absolutely massive track and I would not be surprised if it sees commercial success.

The next track on the album “Young Love (Featuring Laura Marling)” sets the tone for the rest of the album and the “Mystery Jet’s” style – soft pop rock with section after section of catchy lyrics and melodies. I do not know who “Laura Marling” is but she has probably the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in a rock song. The Mystery Jets lyrical writing style is one of story telling similar to such bands as “The Wombats” and “Maximo Park”. “Young Love” is about the reflection of a one night stand with some one who you will never see again because of unforseen circumstances – from both the guys and girls point of view. Just like “The Wombats” it also sounds like there are at least three of them in the band who can sing creating great vocal harmonies.

“Half In Love With Elizabeth” starts off with the catchy chorus lyrics used as an intro into a funky verse which has traces of 80’s synth pop. I am currently listening to all these songs as I write this and I just keep noticing more and more brilliance within the production. I hope Erol sticks to cool bands like “The Mystery Jets”, “The Long Blondes” and “Late Of The Pier” and does not turn his magical abilities into producing a “Madonna” or “Kylie” Record.

Mystery Jets – Half In Love With Elizabeth

“Veiled In Grey” is a more scenic sadder song about reflecting with a friend/girlfriend about the past. I am still yet to put meaning to the chorus lyrics of “I’ll bet you wouldn’t believe me, If I whispered in your ears and said I can see a pink elephant, And it’s standing on the corner of the bed”. They sound very cool regardless especially when sung in conclusion with further emotion and meaning showcasing the amazing voice of lead man “Blaine Harrison”.

I am starting to feel a little bad posting so many of the tracks off their album but it has been too hard not to. You will have to download them all now just incase the record company comes after me requesting them to be taken down (Please contact me if you would like me to remove them). “Hand Me Down” is another track with a sad tone and theme to it which is effortlessly amplified by Blaine’s voice. The track is about a girl looking for love in the wrong places and I love the backing vocals on this track used to ask a question “Do You Love Him?”, reminds me a little of the style and tone of Bloc Party’s backing vocals.

Mystery Jets – Hand Me Down

Ok I think that is about enough said about “The Mystery Jets” – lets hope for an announcment of an Australian Tour this year but not in the second line up for Splendour (As I am not going).

Death Cab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs

The next album I would like to talk about is the new one from “Death Cab for Cutie”. I have not had much time to listen to a lot of this one except for 1 of the tracks which I believe is absolutely perfect. “I Will Possess Your Heart” with its 4 and a Half minute bass, effects and soft guitar intro. I believe that a lot of impatient people will find this intro way too long but I have so much respect for “Death Cab” for putting this on their album. There is of course a radio edit which is much shorter but really in my belief only catches half of the song and half of its greatness. The intro builds just so flawlessly into anticipation for the vocals that come in and changes every thing – the track then begins again creating an astonishing pop masterpiece. I think I have a thing for long songs which has been built into me from listening to a lot of “Pink Floyd” and “LCD Soundsystem”.

So Far I have enjoyed the rest of the album but I have not given it as much time as needed. A couple of the other stand out tracks so far have been “Bixby Canyon Bridge” and “Long Division”. I just recently found out that they are touring Australia and coming to the Tivoli! Unfortunately when I found this out the tickets had already sold out – so that sucks.

I hope all you indie kids enjoy – I know I am.

A Derogatory Playlist PT VI

Once again it is time for me to say “it’s time for the next instalment of A Derogatory Playlist!” This is one that has been a couple of months in the making so some of you might find the tracks a little dated. This just gives more credit to the quality of the track if I still have not got sick of it. The playlist is the same concept as always in that it starts off a little softer or poppier and slowly progresses through indie electro to harder fuller electro. So if you like tougher and more dancey tunes then start from the bottom and if you like it more chilled and versey tracks then start from the top. As always it will fit onto a CD if you could be bothered. Please enjoy.

5. Primary 1 – Hold Me Down (The Shoes Remix)
6. Late Of The Pier – Focker
7. Foals – Electric Bloom (Blaze Trip Remix)
8. Chromeo – Fancy Footwork (Kissy Sell Out Remix)
9. Mystery Jets – Hideaway (Switch Remix)
10. INXS – Need You Tonight (Jon Gill’s One Of My Kind Mix)
11. Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip – Look For The Women (Fake Blood Remix)
12. Annie – I know UR Girlfriend Hates Me (Get Shakes Remix)
13. Goyte – Hearts A Mess (Ocelot Remix)
14. Boyz Noise – Oh (A-Trak Remix)
15. Bag Raiders – Fun Punch (Calling In Sick Remix)

I highly recommend

INXS – I Need You Tonight (Jon Gill’s One Of My Kind Mix)

This was one of two late additions to my highly recommended list after drafting it up about a week ago. It grew its electro infectious disease all over my mind last night as I played it loud. It is one of those tracks that has every thing you need including thumping bass, big distorted snyths, massive beats and robotic vocoders which blend absolutely perfectly with samples of Michael Hutchence’s smooth vocals and INXS sweet guitars. I am surprised that INXS has not been sampled more – or maybe they have…

Annie – I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me (Get Shakes Remix)

This is the second late addition to the highly recommend list which was added just this morning. I do not know how I nearly left it off. After 2006 I had predicted two relatively unknown producers to take 2007 by storm – They were “Kissy Sell Out” and “Shakes” (now “Get Shakes”). While the prediction of Kissy came flying through with 2008 shaping up to be even bigger awaiting his album launch and live show, “Get Shakes” seemed to just stay where they were. Their “Sister Self Doubt” EP was one of my favourite productions of 2007 comprised of utterly faultless electro bangers which still sound original today. I do hope that they can grab 2008 by the balls and become popular enough to tour Australia, because they would be insane live. This remix of Annie comprises of a cool beginning which serves as the perfect intro for what becomes a traditional “Get Shakes” masterpiece which will turn the dance floors into a shameless expression of self obsession.

Bag Raiders – Fun Punch (Calling In Sick Remix)

I highly recommended Calling In Sick’s track “Cali Games” in the last Derogatory Playlist. The still relatively unknown production duo from Sydney has been delivering a string of very professional productions and remixes as you can hear on their myspace. This remix/remastered version of “Fun Punch” is an absolute dance floor filler as I have witnessed first hand at The Empire when The Chop Shop DJs dropped it to a then thin Dance Floor. The intro builds with some Justice electro slap bass into the “Fun Punch” Melody you should all know with a touch more distortion. The track is very high quality and you can really hear the difference when this is put on a big system – enjoy it now but just wait for the club.

Mystery Jets – Hideaway (Switch Remix)

I am not to sure if the “Mystery Jets” have released their new album yet but the anticipation to hear it is really killing me. I have been excited about it ever since I heard that “Erol Alkan” was doing the production. “Switch” never seems to go wrong with remixing and this is another fine example. He is great at taking indie tracks and turning them into fidgety electro house masterpieces, but I must say I like this remix mostly because of the chord progression, guitar and lyrics. If any one already has “The Mystery Jets” album can you please let me know where I can get it.

Chromeo – Fancy Footwork (Kissy Sell Out Remix)

I had not heard this remix any where but Kissy’s Myspace before I saw him play at the Family a couple of weeks ago. As I heard the drums come in over Kissy’s previous track and the vocals “Two Step – On The Floor” I knew the crowd was in for a treat. I however was holding off because I knew exactly what was going to happen at around 3:27 when Kissy introduces a break beat and the track turns to drum & bass – so sweet (Rorey you might like this one). “Chromeo” has to be one of the most remixed bands I have ever heard and I have got to a stage where I usually ignore any new remixes released but how can you ever ignore Kissy?

Late Of The Pier – Focker

This is an incredible track which I heard Kissy Sell Out drop during his set and made an instant note that I needed to find out what it was. I was able to ask Kissy after his set and he let me know that it was “Late of The Pier” and and that “They are going to be massive”. This track is oozing for a remix and I sure it is not long before we see some killers if it gets to the right people. It begins with a very high energy riff which sets the pace for the rest of the track. The kick drum keeps it close to the dance floor and the melody of the lyrics will keep it popular. It finishes with a spacey classical break down which fades into one last electric explosion just when you thought it was over – Perfect.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)

This is a remix which I am still really enjoying listening to after a couple of months. I think it is because it mixes emotional lyrics from “The Whitest Boy Alive” with Fred Falke’s happy house beats. I would love to hear this one on a beach in summer; it is one of those tracks which gives you that feeling which could possibly make it timeless.

Primary 1 – Hold Me Down (The Shoes Remix)

This remix I heard probably 10 times before I even had it on my computer due to my Girl Friends obsession with it. This could mean it is a girly song and I like gay music or it could mean that the girl was right? Either way I like it and I think it does deserve to be highly recommended. The track completely saves it self from going down in a repetitive state at 1:28 when the verse vocals come in giving it that indie feel into a dancey chorus. Maybe this is one for the ladies….

This the most amount of tracks I have ever highly recommended from a play list and there were a couple more which were very hard to leave off. I do believe that this is the BEST “Derogatory Playlist” ever so make sure you download as many of the tracks as you can, turn it up loud and express yourselves while having fun.

Keep an Eye On

Foals – Electric Bloom (Blaze Tripp Remix)

“Blaze Tripp” is a young DJ/Producer from The Gold Coast who is currently turning ripples into waves over the scene with tight productions and remixes. His remix of Foals deservedly earned its place within the playlist of the best dance tracks I have heard over the last couple of months. I highly recommend you check out this young producer and follow his path to success. Check out his Myspace for more.

Kissy Sell Out @ The Family – Brisbane May 3rd 2008

I thought I might also add in a review I did for Inthemix for all you unfortunate souls who might have missed Kissy Sell Out’s tour of Australia recently. It was an intensely fun night and I was rewarded in the end for my years of obsession with Kissy by getting him to sign one of his records and also appearing in a photo on his myspace!
Thanks Kissy – See below.

“Arriving to The Family at around 1am, I was able to catch the last half of Aston Shuffle’s set and was immediately treated to The Presets My People, which sounded oh so sweet in a context that is removed from the twangy commercial radio stations that you can’t always avoid. They had the dancefloor full with their long build ups, and a much tougher electro house then I expected.

Although more could be said about the boys from Canberra, to me this was all about the Kissy Sell Out performance, and the best 10 minutes of Aston’s set was when Kissy was floating around the DJ booth, and I was able to have a chat to him and get my record signed. My excitement built for his set as he flipped through his CDs, changing his mind on how he would work in his intro every time the Shuffle decided they had time for one more track. But I would not have to wait for long until Kissy got up and dropped the intro to his Bolt Action Five remix, making the crowd go all, “Be Kissy friend, Be Kissy foe, Kissy Sell Out has got no doe!” which turned into a building loop as he stood on top of the decks with his arms in the air and the familiar 90s synths of 2 Unlimited Get Ready For This dropped into his own mashed up remix with Ali Love Get Ready for the K Hole, and the screams from the Family’s floor and the balcony echoed above the lasers and two hours of fun begun.

This 23-year old boy from the East of England could not wipe the smile off his face, as he started playing his favourite tunes from the other side of the world to a bunch of screaming kids from Brisbane. Always one for eccentric fashion and pulling it off so well, Kissy’s kit included a shirt that was as long as a dress and plastic spectacles hanging from his neck as an accessory to his mullet. It was this mullet that might have fit in a little better around the same time as ACDC released Thunderstruck, but there it was as – when Kissy was dropping the Crookers remix 18 years later. The clear enjoyment Kissy was showing was rubbing off on the rest of the crowd, with every breakdown accompanied by screams and hands waving for his attention. Kissy would reply by making the kids hearts vibrate and their feet never stop moving, with such tracks like Herve’s remix of Larry Tee’s Licky.

Leading up to the half way point of Kissy’s set, it was still a full on electro onslaught leaving no real opportunity to rest and this was evident by the fact that I had not, and would not stop dancing until he played his last track. The diversity of his set was incredible, mixing so many genres in and outside the dance music world which included the old and the new. It was great to hear some of the hottest tracks in the scene dropped on Family’s soundsystem for what would have to be the first time, including Switch’s remix of Hideaway by the Erol Alkan produced Mystery Jets. My excitement was peaking however when Kissy would drop his own remixes, which he did on several occasions throughout his set. When I heard his remix of Chromeo’s Fancy Footwork for the first time ever in a club, I found myself in a state of complete awe. One of Kissy’s other trade marks is the ‘Air Horn’ that he brings to every one of his gigs, using it to inject excitement and anticipation into the crowd. He got this idea from his days as a drum n’ bass fan, and this love for drum n’ bass also explodes at the end of his remix of Fancy Footwork where the 4/4 is replaced by a break beat – creating plenty of confusion inside The Family walls.

Come the 3am section of his set, and things would soon get a little harder but not before a couple of indie/electro tunes that included the fantastic Focker by Late of the Pier and to quote Kissy after his set, “They are going to be massive!!”. For about the next 20 mins Kissy would explore the old sounds of rave including some hard trance and 4 Strings’s Take Me Away which surprised, yet in no way disappointed anyone in the room. There were massive beats and Kissy’s hands would be in the air pumping for the drops, making my view from the balcony to the dance floor interesting as I could see the young punters trying to keep up. These harder tracks were accompanied by a couple of tougher electro ones including Kissy’s own mash named Let There Be Blazing Light and Midfield General’s Disco Sirens which is a track produced by Xaiver from Justice, and mixed by David from Soulwax. How could you go wrong?

With half an hour to go, I thought things could not really get any better but little did I know that the real noise was still to come! As Kissy looped Every Body Has Been Looking For Some Thing from Sweet Dreams, the crowd gained a second wind and when the crazy soloed synths of Kissy’s own Harriet belted through the speakers I completely lost the plot; so much so an off duty staff member of The Family told me I needed to calm down or I would be kicked out. This was a little hard when he went straight into his remix of Wind It Up by Gwen Stefani, then into a remix of One More Time and then into his remix of All Saints’ Chick Fit. All that distortion, all those synthed up keyboard riffs, all that Kissy and we were all in heaven. With fifteen minutes to go Kissy did the right thing for me and slowed it down a little opting to finish with some 80s pop beach house, disco and hip hop that included Girls Just Want To Have Fun, The Jackson Five and a Thriller remix. If only every two hours of every night was filled with that much joyful emotion, then a part of the weekend would never die. “
