Two Thousand & Eight

It has been a massive year for music and a year where I have listened to more albums then I thought possible. In the same vein as my Top 15 Albums of 2007 you will find below my subjective Top 25 Albums of 2008.

Top 25 Albums of 2008

25. Shameboy – Heartcore

Starting the countdown are Belgium electro thumpers Shameboy who I only became aware of after they played the set before Soulwax at the festival I visited in Belgium earlier in the year.
Definitely the most electronic act to make my list – this is true pounding electro music.

Shameboy – Heartcore
Shameboy – Splendit

24. Fujiya and Miyagi – Transparent Things

I am desperate to see these guys live and rumours are they are coming to Australia around March. I only got into their first CD this year and although ‘Transparent Things’ was better then the first the fact that the sound was so similar to the iis why it is not further up the list.

Fujiya And Miyagi – Knickerbocker
Fujiya and Miyagi – Pickpocket

23. Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree

As you might know from reading this blog I do not listen to one genre of music and I believe that you should have a range of good albums for all moods and situations. Goldfrapp’s ‘Seventh Tree’ managed a lot of listens from me this year due to the fact that it was perfect for all those situations where you do not feel like drowning in distortion. Due to a few reasons but mainly my stupidity on the night I missed them at Parklife – I am still hating myself for this.

Goldfrapp – A & E
Goldfrapp – Happiness

22. Neon Neon – Stainless Style

This was probably one of the most diverse albums I heard all year and it really stood out at the time. The diversity of the album meant that there were tracks that hit me perfectly and tracks that failed to come close – an album that was able to hit me in all places would have scored much higher on my list.

Neon Neon – I Told Her On Alderaan
Neon Neon – Raquel

21. These New Puritans – Beat Pyramid

I had actually almost forgotten about These New Puritans until I composed this list. I was heavily into their album at the start of the year but it really seemed to drop off my radar for whatever reason. If it was released in the last couple of months it would have climb much higher.

Ok I just went looking for the album so I could play a song and remember what they sounded like and realised that it is no longer in my library – must have been lost in the crash of my hard drive earlier in the year. Now that explains why I have forgotten about them.

These New Puritans – Swords Of Truth

20. Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream

What a great year it was for the Aussies with 5 albums making my top 25 and I am sure at least a couple making just about everyone else’s. Empire Of The Sun were quite a surprise pack in the current year finding immediate commercial success with a few great productions. However the reason why they are so far down my list is that although there are a few tracks which would be in the top 10 of the year others are so far off that as a whole the album is not that great – similar to MGMT for me.

Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream
Empire Of The Sun – We Are The People

19. Friendly Fires – Friendly Fires

I really thought that Friendly Fires would land further up my list then this as I was anticipiating their album all year from listening to their EP’s however for some reason I just never got obsessed enough with it – I guess that from here the albums below start to really become ones I listened to heaps!!! – I would love to see these guys live so hopefully next year.

Friendly Fires – Paris
Friendly Fires – On Board

18. The Faint – Fascination

I must say it is a little disappointing to see The Faint this far down my top 25 as ‘Wet From Birth’ would have been in the top 5 if it had been released this year. Not a bad album by any means just far from my expectations. Their show at The Zoo this year was definitely one of the best I saw all year

The Faint – The Geeks Were Right
The Faint – Get Suduced

17. Late Of The Pier – Fantasy Black Channel

Well it is a little disappointing that these boys are in the country at the moment but are not making it up to Brisbane. Erol made a slight habit this year of taking indie bands with energy and producing flawless albums. I am really looking forward to hearing what the young guys can do next.

16. Hercules and Love Affaire – Hercules and Love Affaire

Well in the resurgence of disco in 2008 there was one label DFA at the top of it all and one of their prodigies Hercules and Love Affaire showing everyone how to do it live. The production genius of Andy Butler teamed with what only could be described as some sort of mardi gra toured the world conquering venues and festivals all over with their blend of octave bass, horns, disco vibes and transvestites. I was lucky enough to come across this show twice in the year – once in Belgium and more recently at Modular’s Nevereverland festival with both times blowing me away with fun.

15. MGMT – Oracular Spectacular (Disqualified)

I had to go back to my original post to get the mp3 links for MGMT album when I saw that I had posted about them in February this year after first hearing their album. I then started to wonder if their album had actually even been released this year when a Google search enlightened me to the fact that it was released in October 2007. It seems that the mass hype about them over the last 6 months has made everyone including myself forget about how long this album has actually been out. MGMT you are disqualified from my top 25 of 2008 (half of the songs on the album are shit anyway).

Download (right click save as);
MGMT – Kids
MGMT – Time To Pretend

14. Does It Offend You Yeah? – You Don’t Know What You’re Getting Your Self Into
DOIYY the electro rockers that I was sure would crack my top ten! Now why then did they only come in at number 14?? Unfortunately I think it has come down to something which was completely out of their control and had absolutely nothing to do with the quality of their album. After looking forward to seeing them live for months at Parklife this year I was disgustingly disappointed at the 30 min low volume set they delivered – Now I do believe that this was because of;
1. The bass player had broken his leg so they could not play all their tracks and
2. Sound restrictions on the shitty stage they were put on.
It is strange how a crap live performance can bring an album down in my ears but somethings are just unexplained (The Teenagers did not even make my top 25 after their pathetic excuse for a live performance).

Does It Offend You, Yeah? – We Are Rockstars
Does It Offend You, Yeah? – Let’s Make Out

13. The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur

The Cinematic Orchestra’s album, like Goldfrapp’s made it into my top 25 due to the fact that it is perfect for those occasions where something heavier is not needed. Its atmospheric sounds create a somewhat floating mood which is perfect for background music in those times where you are doing something else other than just listening to music. The vocal tracks on this album are amazing and it oozes emotion throughout. I know that this album will definitely be one that sticks with me next year.

12. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours

Seeing Cut Copy kill it at Nevereverland a couple of weekends ago reminded me of why I like them so much. I know a lot of people will probably put this album much higher then number 12 but all the albums from here down were just so good that only the slightest things set them apart. I really love how well “In Ghost Colours” is mixed and I am not sure if you can put that down to DFA’s Tim Goldworthy, frontman Dan Whitford or both but the album flows perfectly from one track to the next which makes it hard not to listen to the complete album every time.

11. Grafton Primary – Eon

I ended up writing a review about Grafton Primary’s album and their live show for Time Off magazine but never posted about it on this blog. I think it just slipped away from me but I am glad I get to talk about it now. Grafton Primary was probably one of the first bands I really started supporting on this blog due to my immediate love for them after their EP last year. The release of their new album this year really excited me and rightfully deserves its place so far up my personal ladder. The two songs I have posted below are absolute dance floor destroyers and any DJ who wants to be slightly original should grab them and start throwing them into their sets and watch what happens….

10. Hot Chip – Made In The Dark

It seems like so long ago that Hot Chip released ‘Made In The Dark’ but every time I play it I remember just how good these guys are. I saw them in Belgium this year and their set had improved 100% from the 2 other times I had seen them in Australia – this was mainly due to the fact that they were looking more like a band with front men rather then 5 geeks hiding behind keyboards. It was a great show and I am really looking forward to seeing them at The Big Day Out in January! – Welcome to my top 10.

9. Scenario Rock – Histrionics

I was so obsessed with Scenario Rock’s album at the start of the year that I thought it was a shoe in for my top 5 however I did not predict the quality of every album below to come after. I really enjoy albums that do not sound like everything else at the moment and Scenario Rock take their tracks and strip them back with amazing piano compositions which set the scene for track after track of witty pop brilliance. ‘Histrionics’ is one of my favourite tracks of the year – I have tried to push this track onto many people but noone I know yet seems to understand it – give it a go.

8. The Shortwave Set – Harmonica

The Shortwave Set’s ‘Harmonica’ is currently the album which I am listening to the most. I am reading the book ‘Shantaram’ and I have been enjoying listening to the album at the same time and now every time I hear it I think of India. The standout of ‘Harmonica’ is definitely the vocal arrangements and melodies which are ideally fitted to the soft rock and electronic backgrounds to make a dangerously catchy combination. I posted the ‘Aeroplane remix’ of ‘Now Til 69′ in my last Derogatory Playlist and because of the catchy lyrics it is one of my favourite remixes of the year.

7. The Presets – Apocalypso

Well I never posted about The Presets album when it came out because I believed that it would not really need to be spoken about – I was right and I still do not need to say anything but I will still say; Thank you presets for all the good times, I look forward to seeing you again.

6. Cazals – What Of Our Future

As some of you may have realised by now I love my indie rock and it has been a great year for it. I can always find a time to listen to ‘What Of Our Future’ as it is such a fun and easy album to listen to. Like any good indie band the bass and drums work in tight competition with each other keeping the rhythm for the addition of smart guitar and vocals. Along with the others in my top 10 I have not seen live yet, Cazals is definitely up there – please come to Australia in 2009!

Cazals – To Cut A Long Story Short
Cazals – Life Is Boring

5. Bloc Party – Intimacy

‘A Weekend in the City’ Managed to gain top spot in Derogatory’s prior years top 15 albums and I was thinking for a moment that Bloc Party could have done the double. After many listens I had to be honest to myself and admit that ‘Intimacy’ was not as good as its predecessors however another direction another fantastic fucking album. I am just so grateful that they decided to bring out ‘Intimacy’ this year as it meant an unforgettable performance at riverstage. I love you Bloc Party and I wait for what is next.

Bloc Party – Biko
Bloc Party – Trojan Horse

4. M83 – Saturdays = Youth

Layer and layer of perfection are smoothed gracefully over every part of M83’s sensational album ‘Saturdays = Youth’. Definitely the album after my ‘number 1’ I have listened to the most this year probably because of the fact it is able to suit so many moods from chill to dance at exactly the same time without even changing a beat. I recommend this album to everyone as I just can not understand how you could not like it.

Download (right click save as);
M83 – Skin Of The Night
M83 – Graveyard Girl

3. Foals – Antidote

Foals are the band who I am absolutely dying to see live as I believe that their set will produce a type of energy for the duration which would be unmatched by any indie band I am currently into. Their unique brand of indie rock grabbed me on first listen and I was so amazed at how such a strange mixture and arrangement of sounds could be so catchy. Their tracks must be influenced by the dance circles in big way as their use of instruments creates an irresistible temptation to get up and move every part of your body in time to each beat.

Foals – The French Open
Foals – Cassius

2. Jackson Jackson – Tools For Survival

Now I am not sure if you could find Jackson Jackson’s album on any other Blogs top 10 let alone at number 2 but the only reason behind this is that none of the other blogs you may read have given it a listen. ‘All Alone’ has gained massive air play here in Australia on the radio station Triple J which was a big cause behind the success of their previous album which if you loved you would most probably find it difficult to like ‘Tool For Survival’.

There have been stages over the last couple of months where I was seriously contemplating giving this album the number 1 spot as track after track on the album continued to produce this original sounding delight that I just could not get enough of. These are pop songs made with the edge of originality which will never get them recognised as pop itself and will keep it in the alternative section at your record store. The use of fat synthesisers and effects behind emotional falsettos and choir’s fuse a sound together which is so powerful you will feel the butterflies flow through your body with every kick of the bass drum.

Get the album, listen to it until you love it and then enjoy loving it.

1. Mystery Jets – 21

Well other then a few late challenges from my top 5 Mystery Jets have really planted their foot in the number 1 spot for most of the year. I must say that I think Mr Erol Alkan and his production genius has something to do with it but there is no doubt that this band deserves everything that has come to it. I was unbelievably lucky to see them at an intimate gig in Ibiza this year and I think it is fitting that they will be the first band I see in the New Year on the 1st of January in Melbourne. Other then the connection of Erol producing their album and the big synth on Hideaway, Mystery Jets are quite a distance away from dance music however through remixes and the respect Erol oozes in the community they have been widely accepted and loved which have massively helped their success.

Download (right click save as);
Mystery Jets – Hideaway
Mystery Jets – Young Love (Featuring Laura Marling)

Well that is it for another year but I must give an honourable mention (in no particular order) to the following albums that did not quite make the top 25 but which I thoroughly enjoyed over the year

Van She – V
Lindstrom – Where You Go I Go Too
TV On The Radio – Dear Science
Why? – Alopecia
Cold War Kids – Loyalty to Loyalty
The Teenagers (you fucked yourself with your live performance)
Hot Little Hands – Dynamite In Black And White
Kraak And Smaak – Plastic People
Ladytron – Velocifero
Lykke Li – Youth Novel
Metronomy – Nights Out
Morgan Geist – Doube Night Time
Primal Scream – Beautiful Future
The Kills – Midnight Bloom
The Whip – X Marks Destination
Pendulum – In Silico

Thanks to anyone and everyone who comes here and reads the content which I know can sometimes be a little strange. I hope I can continue to find time in the new year to dribble some shit and a lot of good music. If you disagree with any of my selections of the top 25 I would love to hear why and if you can suggest any other albums which did not get a mention I would love to listen to them if I have not already.

Buy the tracks from Itunes

Thanks again and have a good new year.

When The Deep Part Of Me Meets The Shallow Part Of Me

I am glad I am getting around to doing this post – I have been listening to so many great albums the last few months it would be a crime not to share them with you. 2008 has been a fantastic year for the artist album and there has rarely been a week that where I am not enjoying something new.

Bloc Party – Intimacy

Everyone was extremely surprised when Bloc Party suddenly announced that they would release their new album for download. Almost instantly everybody had the opportunity to hear their third official full length album. I counted down the hours until the download became available while waiting impatiently knowing that Bloc Party was about to deliver something special for me as they always seem to do.

There are many people out there who enjoyed Bloc Party at a certain time of their career mainly being the mainstream success of ‘Silent Alarm’ and have since then been unable to appreciate the direction they have gone. ‘A Weekend in the City’ was my number 1 album last year and the B Side compilation ‘Another Weekend in the City’ was not far behind. The emotion which Kele brought to ‘A Weeekend in the City’ easily matched the energy which was ‘Silent Alarm’.

‘Intimacy’ has seen Bloc Party take another step in a different direction and at the same time keeping not only the energy from ‘Silent Alarm’ but also the Emotion from ‘A Weekend in the City’. The electronic elements of ‘Intimacy’ make the album new and exciting whilst at the same time taking nothing away from this indie rock band. The first single Mercury hinted that Bloc Party was not afraid to let people pre perceive the album going a particular electronic direction. The trademark guitar licks seen throughout Halo would soon prove that this album would be taking the listener in every direction.

The defining song for me has been Biko - what I believe to be the less obvious story of a loved one with a drug addiction – however the more obvious cancer could prove correct. Regardless of the correct theme it is song of depression and despair felt for a loved one as you see them slipping away. The only two obvious instruments for the first two minutes of the song are the guitar running over the notes of the chord progression and the most amazing of all instruments – Kele’s voice oozing despair lighting the song with darkness. The limited offbeat bass then comes in and is soon joined with electronic synthesised drum pads brining unpredictability as the lyrics build into each touching chorus.

Trojan Horse proves that Bloc Party can still pick up all their original instruments and when the massive electronic guitar comes whaling into a solo at 2:20, images of a surely unbeatable live mosh pit will rush through your veins. The bells on signs will give you a glorious ride as the beautiful sounds surround your head covered in those earphones.

I predict One Month Off as being their next single as to me it sounds the friendliest with some ‘Silent Alarm’ pop chorus techniques. I am sure that there are still many of you who could not listen to this album more then once but I highly recommend you give it a few more goes.

Van She – V

It is great to see Van She finally release their debut album. They spent most of last year building their reputation through a range of extremely successful remixes. This strategy planted their name on the lips of the international scene in anticipation for this very symbolic album. I am sure many Van She Tech fans will probably have a lot of trouble getting through this whole album as their search for big distorted bass falls well short. Van She are a very trendy band and they have reflected this in their smooth synth driven 80’s guitar rock. Van She is another Modular prodigy which continues to drive this thriving electro indie scene on this large island down at the bottom of the earth. I thought I would put up their album version of Kelly as it adds greatness to a great hit. It Could Be The Same is a jumpy pop electronic number which utilises the bass and drums proving the tightness of the band.

Friendly Fires – Friendly Fires

I have posted about Friendly Fires before however at the time they had only released a couple of EP’s and I was long awaiting their new album. Well it has arrived and definitely has not disappointed. This three piece is really cool and I think the girls especially will love their brand of electro indie pop. As you can hear from the infectious track Paris these guys are all about making you feel good through their music and lyrics. On Board is another fine example of how easy the band is to listen to – I just don’t see how you could not like this sort of music?

Shameboy – Heartcore

Well there is a story behind this next group Shameboy from Belgium. On my recent trip to the country these guys were doing a live set (similar setup to chemical brothers) at Rock Werchter before their local pals Soulwax. As Soulwax was the reason I had come to the festival in the first place, I needed to get up the front of this 30,000 (a rough guess) people tent and that involved being right up in it for Shameboy’s set. I had a bunch of 17 year old Belgium kids telling me I was in for a treat as this unknown (to this little Aussie) Shameboy was about to blow me away. I told them “Whatever, I am just here for Soulwax” – One of the little kids then tried to bet me 100 euro that I would like them (clearly money he probably did not have). The confidence shown by this kid in his music immediately brought excitement in me for their set.

What happened next was quite amazing – True pounding progressive electro music started belting through the speakers and the crowd rushed forward putting me in a suprising but not so difficult situation – Get amongst it or lose the front row for Soulwax? The atmosphere was incredible as I started to get overtaken by a bunch of local kids high on nothing but an extremely early taste for some fantastic dance music.

To cut a long story short this live performance went off and I never expected a couple of dudes I had never heard of to produce such energy into their local crowd – it was a pleasure to be apart of it. So this post is an ode to that time in my life – Thank you Belgium once again for some amazing electro. And for any of you kids who have got into this shit through a lot of the indie stuff, this is a reminder to you what Electro really is.

Late Of The PierFantasy Black Channel

Well they say that all good things come in three’s and Erol has proven that in the year of 2008 with the production of three brilliant ground breaking albums all of which have now featured on this blog. Erol Alkan is treated like an absolute god in the scene and is respected by everyone including those who he would look up to. But to plebs like me his ability to not only know what sounds good but also make it sound so good is just over exciting. He is the only DJ who I really want to see, so I continue to hope that he will make his first trip out to Australia sometime in the near future. Anyway this post was meant to be about Late Of The Pier but Erol is just too cool!

I have started getting involved with writing reviews for a local street press magazine so I thought I might as well get a 2 4 1 deal and post them up here anyway to save me writing about albums twice – See below for Cazals and Ambidexter reviews for Time Off Magazine.

Cazals – What Of Our Future

UK act Cazals are part of the uber-hip French Kitsuné label, responsible for the likes of electro superstars Digitalism and the trendsetting Kitsune Maison compilation. Before the release of What Of Our Future, Cazals’ popularity was fuelled by a number of high quality electro remixes drawn from their early singles, feeding the scene a false perception that this band was part of it.

So you’d be forgiven for thinking that this debut long-player from the group would be teeming with electronic riffs and dominated by the kick drum. But first single ‘To Cut A Long Story Short’ cuts any electronic perception short, with the opening screaming distorted guitar riff bearing closer resemblance to Bloc Party’s ‘Helicopter.’

Second single ‘Life Is Boring’ has all the ingredients of an alternative hit – the verse is tightly gripped by the rhythm section, leaving the guitar with little room to interrupt as the vocals bounce off every kick with the angst of interpersonal conflicts saturating the lyrics. Each track on the album has an all-important pop element, highlighted by the chord-driven choruses of tracks like ‘Poor Innocent Boys’ and ‘We’re Just The Same’. The ironic silence at the top and tail of ‘Comfortable Silence’ sets the scene for Cazals’ token slow melodic track featuring vocoder as back up.

Cazals might have taken their first step with the guidance of the electro scene, but this debut shows they seem destined to leave their print in the mosh pit of the indie crowd. What Of Our Future is an album which oozes modern day indie rock via driving guitars and pop melodies which in time will soften even the hardest of electro heads.

Ambidexter – Ambidexter

Perth 4 piece Ambidexter has stayed true to their name by asserting cross-dominance over a range of musical genres with equal skill. From electro-rock-soft-pop to breakbeat-industrial- hip hop, Ambidexter has mastered the art of fusing a vast range of genres into one. The four piece outfit from one of the most isolated metropolitan areas on earth have landed with an incredible debut album set to pleasure any one that is lucky enough to get in the way.

The opening track ‘Night Life’ shows that Ambidexter are more then just a band with beats. The synthasised bass and funky guitar help drive the soothing lyrics towards a search for an infinite night. The night however does continue with the second track ‘After Show’ and the story of slow cumulative confidence building to the sound of force fed drinks, percussion and an Aussie accent.

The album slows right down as the third and most friendly track ‘Paranoid Behaviour Control’ is dubbed on intro and then joined by female vocals leading an indie chorus. The feel of the track however changes for the third time in less then a minute and a half when the whole thing breaks down with electronic hip hop and building sound scapes which step back up to the chorus. The album continues to deliver this commercial feel on the next track ‘Silicon Systems’ as it brings the album to an early climax with the fusion of rock, hip hop and broken down electronics.

The remaining six tracks help deliver a ground breaking debut album for this newly formed foursome. ‘Closer’ will give breaks fans a taste of their favourite beat while the bass riff on ‘Forever And A Day’ will bring those disco balls closer to your sensors. The production throughout the whole album is of a very high standard and the time an effort put into the outcome is evident. All that is needed now is a touring live show which can recreate the diversity of the album live. If that can happen then there is something very different to look forward to this summer.

Hot Little Hands – Dynamite In Black & White

Hot Little Hands are a Hot Little Band from Melbourne who I was lucky enough to stumble across because of my slight obsession with Plug In City. I really have a lot of respect for the type of music which Plug In City make and I thought I would check out who they recommend in their friends list on their myspace. Not long after I clicked on the link for Hot Little Hands I was on iTunes downloading their album. It was on a trip to Sydney where I started to play this album a few times and I don’t know if it was perfect plane music or just the fact that it is pretty perfect music but I instantly fell in love with these guys. I have now joined their mailing list and will be keeping an eye out for any Brisbane shows as I think they are mainly just playing in Melbourne at this stage of their careers.

The Black Ghosts – The Black Ghosts

I have been following the Black Ghosts for quite some time now and was pleased to hear they finally released their debut album. I have struggled to get fully into this one with my favourite tracks still being the ones I heard a long time ago. I feel as if they have tried to be a little too poppy on their newer ones so I will post a couple of my old favourites instead.

CSS – Donkey

I think it was in a Mixmag issue where I read a horrible review on CSS’ new album Donkey. This put me off getting it for a couple of months until I thought it did deserve a go as it was only one dude’s opinion. Well I soon learnt my lesson not to listen to reviews as Donkey is a fantastic album. I honestly did not really get into their last album except ‘Lets Make Love’ just because it was such a big song in the scene at the time. Donkey is heaps more clean, indie and catchy as fuck. The only dude in the band does all the production and you can hear his talent on the remixes released under CSS – he has managed to conduct this band of girls very well and from their live performance I caught this year they can reproduce it. The album is pretty corny in parts but still very cool as you can forgive stupid lyrics when it is in a Brazilian accent.

A Derogatory Playlist PT V

I have been listening to a lot of albums over the last month so my knowledge of remixes and dance music has slightly fallen behind. Luckily I was still able to gather a few very special tracks for the next instalment of A Derogatory Playlist.

A Derogatory Playlist PT V – Easter Egg Special

Download;
1. The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris Remix)
2. Settlefish – Summerdrip (Amari Night Members Club Rmx)

10. The Teenagers – Starlett Johanssen (Rory Mix)
11. Klaas vs I Am Finn – Hard (David Sugar Remix)

13. Trash Fashion – Why Can’t We Be Friends? (Mason Storm’s 2 Hottie Mix)
14. Calling In Sick – Cali Games
15. Bag Raiders – Nill By Mouth (Knightlife Remix)

I highly recommend

The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris) - The original of this track is really gaining popularity and I only found that out after thoroughly enjoying this remix. Calvin Harris is clearly a genius and all I hope is that he continues to produce great disco dance hits/remixes and does not turn to the dark side and start producing for pop stars as a career. His album was one of my favorite from last year and his live show earlier this year was very impressive. I loved him for touring with a band when he could have just as easily settled for a one man show like Muscles. This remix is real disco pop and it is sure to make every one happy.

Cut Copy – Lights and Music (Moulinex Remix)
I have been a little obsessed with Cut Copy’s Lights and Music since I first noticed it in a live set last year at Daft Punk. I have just got my hands on their new album “In Ghost Colours” and for just one listen so far it is really sounding the goods. It almost reminds me of “The Dark Side of The Moon” in the way it is mixed and put together with pysadelic intermissions between tracks. The original will always stand above this remix because “Moulinex” decided to loop just the “And Music” for the closing part of the track cutting out the all important weapon of the original chorus lyrics. The remix becomes an absolute destroyer at around 1:30 when the jumpy bass synth provides a real electro feel. This has been my favorite remix for a few weeks now and is still going strong; I would love to hear this one out.

Calling In Sick – Cali Games – Where the hell did these guys come from?? Apparently Sydney and I thank my mate Skour for pointing them out to me. I first heard their track “Cali Games” on their myspace and I was amazed at the bumpy ride the track took me on. The first noise that grabbed me was what sounded like a clean synthesised slap bass riff which was soon accompanied by the complete opposite in a disgustingly dirty lower end. The track continues to lay down amazing sounds and riffs which sounds a little like Kissy Sell Out if he was to sign to Ed Banger records. . It sounds like a lead guitarist is hiding somewhere within this electro production, with incredible solo synthesised guitar riffs ripping perfectly through the bottom end of the track. Check out the boys at their myspace for some of their other productions/remixes. If “Ajax” has heard these guys I am sure he could be thinking of putting them on his new label as they would fit perfectly.

The Rolling Stones – You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Soulwax Remix) – Well this is just another remix for the Dewaele brothers to add to their already blinding resume of all things perfect in music. I believe “The Rolling Stones” had some say in how far they could go from the original and what the end product would be, but who would not trust Soulwax to produce perfection in every form. This remix was made for the new movie coming out soon called “21″ which has the greatest sound track I have ever seen including tracks from “MGMT, Get Shakes, LCD Soundsystem (New Track), Peter Bjorn and John, Junkie XL, UNKLE and Mark Ronson”. The remix is progressive keeping the original vocal track building with some synthy bass and what I believe to be original samples. This track will be perfect for the movie and I am looking forward to seeing how they use it.

Hope you enjoy the tracks, have a great Easter, eat lots of chocolate and remember the myth at Skull Hill near Jerusalem.
