A Derogatory ReTerms

After over a year hiatus A Derogatory ReTerms on http://aderogatoryterm.com giving us the freedom we need to post what we like with out the stick of Google’s Blogspot prodding us in the anus.

Adso and I are as keen as ever so let’s hope we can keep it going. Our musical taste has both shifted in all directions, which will give you a greater variety of sounds.  Quality of tracks is also going to be a focus of mine and I plan to post Wav files whenever I get a chance.

I thought I may as well start where I left off with the next instalment of A Derogatory Playlist. The tracks below range from Disco, House, Deep house, Acid, Tech House and Electro. I am starting to gain an interest in Techno so I look forward to exploring this avenue more in the future. Same concept as always in that the Playlist builds from the start – so you will find the heavier tracks at the end.

Enjoy

I highly recommend….

Soul Clap – Lonely C. feat. Charles Levine

I first heard Lonely C on Wolf & Lamb & Soulclap’s awesome DJ Kicks compilation. The two groups have really taken the dance scene by storm exploding in popularity this year through many years of hardwork put in by W&L in throwing infamous parties in New York. The track is led by a strong jumpy bass line and the whaling effected lyrics of Charles Levine which slap and stick to your mind.

Sander Kleinenberg – The Journey feat Ursula Rucker (Kolombo Remix)

Kolombo takes you on a disco Journey with a punishing bass line, funky guitar and sharp synth stabs. This is a complete track with an electronic break with incubating synth lines, bringing you up then down just before that bass line punishes you again till the end.

WhoMadeWho – Every Minute Alone (Tale Of Us Remix)

WhoMadeWho have been one of my favourite bands for a long time and their affiliation with the electronic dance music screen has spawned a string of quality remixes from all their albums. I am yet to get their new album but if the vocal track on this Tech House remix is anything to go by then there is a lot to look forward to. The vocals lead into a thumping dark techno bass line which is sure to turn the lights off in any set especially with the Wav file.

Alex Metric & Steve Angello – Open Your Eyes (Original_Mix)

I thought I had grown out of the big room electro sound however this weapon of a track has made me appreciate the power of the mix between good quality production, huge bass and a Wav file. Play it loud and grind those molars.

Thanks

Here is a first for the blog – Three Derogatory playlist in one single post for your aural pleasure. No not for your oral pleasure – please see below for that kind of filth you sick fucks..

“It feels best in-between my two bottom teeth ;)

My concentration on club/dance music is starting to fall further behind to the time I spend on listening to albums. However I have had a massive hand the last few months in being shown some of the best remixes through Aeroplane’s monthly sets – my playlists below draw influence from them. My taste in dance music is honestly getting a little bit soft, the electro bangers of the past seem to be slipping out of my reach as I no longer spend every weekend under a speaker clenching my fists and screaming for the drops.

“Fuck – its fucking cyanide!”
Maybe my taste has matured or maybe the ugly commercial side of electro has begun to taint it with a majority of fidgety or distorted offensive rubbish that it is making it harder to find those true bangers. This is not saying they are lost as I hope they never will be on this blog. Check the playlist’s towards the end and you will still find some floating around.
“My skin has never been so soft after visiting the sperm bank”
I have listened to each of the below playlist’s many times by now and can highly recommend each of them in the full for a real uplifting journey. I have kindly Zipped up each one as well so if you know you want the whole thing then you can just download it in one click.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Higher Than the Stars (Saint Etienne Visits Lord Spank Mix)

This is one of those really nice easy to listen to tracks, which is perfect for any moment and could even have its place on an open minded dance floor. The hook centers on the soothing vocals both male and female following each other through tales of childhood confusion. Long euphoric breakdowns and uplifting melodies work together to keep your eyes shut and your imagination flowing.

Chromeo – Night By Night (Skream Remix)

I cannot really comment on exactly what Skream has done to the original as I am yet to hear it. On its own the track’s vocals work perfectly with the slow dubbing breaks, I can imagine the original would have more of a straight synth hook while Skream delivers his low frequency bass lines which fuse perfectly with the catchy vocoder chorus Chromeo has become famous for. Sensual lyrics also trademark of the boys are delivered best with the slow driving low melodies. Chromeo never miss with a straight up pop song and Skream has managed to keep all of the right elements to deliver a perfect pop remix with sounds a little further from the commercial ears.

Metronomy – Do The Right Thing (Wild Geese remix)

This has definitely been one of my favorite remixes over the last couple of months and has been made to get a dance floor started. A tight bouncy intro with teasing lyrics builds to break then build again to destroy – I dare you to put this one on with some serious volume, listen to it from the start and try not to move when it drops at 3:36. Some massive synth tweaking follows and the bouncing continues….. Enjoy, I know I have many times.

Au Revoir Simone – Another Likely Story (Aeroplane Remix)

I believe that Aeroplane should have named this an “Aeroplane Pop Mix” as they did with their take on Hearts On Fire. You can’t really go wrong in sampling the lyrics of Au Revoir Simone as they have already found out on their take of Paris by Friendly Fires. Aeroplane have a knack for not only producing uplifting remixes but also throwing down incredibly uplifting DJ sets as a lot of us found out at Parklife this year. The mood they are able to incubate is one of complete joy, which is a long distance away from some grinding beats we also all love. I know that they are currently working on an album, playing all instruments themselves, doing it the hard but only way – lets all hope for an incredible live show when their album is released and they are ready to tour.

Wolfmother – New Moon Rising (Riton Vocal Rub)

Well it has been awhile since Wolfmother has been the centre of remixes – being Modular base they will always have a easy strong push into the dance scene with quality remixes. I am sure every body can remember MSTRKRFT’s remix of Woman back in the day. I prefer Riton’s Vocal Rub over his Club Rub as I think the vocals are a definite stand out of the remix and they need to be the centre. I am a massive fan of Riton in all his forms and this remix showcases a twitchy side I have not heard much of – all his productions are clean and tight and this is no exception. Sorry for the 128kbps but all I could find for now.

Headman – Dirt (The C90s Remix)

This is another igniter for the dance floor – bouncing in the same direction as the Do The Right Thing remix above. The vocals make the track feel indie although at almost 9 mins long there is plenty of time to build layers and the vocals are just one of them. The vocal verses slow down the track just enough to hook you in as the disco brass stabs at your inhibitions. 4 minutes in and the track is just beginning – the big synth starts panning to the left and each loop adds another direction until you begin to sing the melodies just as much as you will sing the lyrics when they quietly drop as the beat breaks at 5:25 – “All the voices in my brain, this is the one that sends me insane, of all the faces in my mind this is the one I’m longing to find – freaking out.” Then the bass begins and your movement is a history that you will find repeated with a simple press of play.

D.I.M. & TAI – Lyposuct (Original)

I guess highly recommending this track is testament I still have balls although they may have shriveled almost completely into my body. I assume this is the good type of electro all the hipster kids are listening to these days as they bang their heads and imitate the bass with their face. Anyway the production on this track is amazingly clean as two completely opposite sounds (Squeaky high and distorted low) combine with tough drums to take the listener on an aggressive ride to electro heaven.

Keep Me In My Plane (Modernaire Remix) – Who Made Who

I hope that a string of good remixes continue to seep in every direction as long as possible from Who Made Who’s The Plot. It will continue to remind me of how fucking good that album was and to give it another listen which is will always deserve. Modernaire has managed to up the beat a little on this remix and dice the main melody with a metal tweaked effect which pollutes the bass line with toughness whilst retaining its original funk.

“Hopefully this will turn daddy off tonight”

That should keep you all busy for a little while so until next time – have some fun.

Thanks

Nothing In Its Right Place

I come to you again missing a chance to see some awesome live music (last time I missed Good Vibes) – I hope this doesn’t become a trend! I’m pretty devastated I didn’t get to see my favourite artist at the moment Breakbot at The Monastery on Thursday night. Did anyone go? If so, how was it? Anyway, Breakbot definitely makes the funnest music going around at the moment. Every song of his is so light-hearted yet so danceable and catchy that it’s impossible not to like him.

(Actual painting on a road)

Breakbot’s most recent remix is for Yuksek’s track Extraball off his album which I featured last time I posted. The original is good, but I think it sounded a little cluttered; Breakbot cleans it up nicely by spacing out the bass a bit and adding some “pssch” drums and synth squiggles.

Yuksek – Extra Ball (Breakbot Remix)

(Penelope Pitstop)

I usually like Breakbot remixes a lot more than his originals, however his most recent original Penelope Pitstop bucks that trend. This song’s a bit heavier and faster than his usual productions. Don’t worry though, he still manages to retain the fun and danceability of his songs.

And just in case you don’t have it, I will post my favourite Breakbot production – and one of my favourite songs of all time – his remix of A Thing For Me by Metronomy. It’s so laidback, simple and catchy, it’s just perfect pop. I don’t want to build up your expectations too high but it really is that good.

Metronomy – A Thing For Me (Breakbot Remix)

If you’re loving those, here’s another sweet Breakbot remix I found not long ago, as a bonus.

Alb – Sweet Sensation (Breakbot Remix)

As a bit of a follow-on from Jimps’ previous post about Whitest Boy Alive, I thought I’d let you all know that Erlend Oye (the lead singer) did a DJ-Kicks mix a few years ago. It features him creating special edits of some cool tracks where he sings over the top of them. Artists in the mix include: The Rapture, Phoenix, Morgan Geist, Royksopp, Alan Braxe and Fred Falke
among others. I’ve posted one of the standouts of the mix by Morgan Geist and also a nice little edit by Jack Tennis of Courage from Whitest Boy Alive’s new album (which Jimps posted the original of).

It’s not often you get a Radiohead remix that is worth the time of day. They usually just never compare to the original and ultimately ruin the song. Despite his off-putting name, Gigamesh comes through with goods here, producing a simple but effective remix of Everything In It’s Right Place. He basically gives it enough drive and some build-ups and break-downs so a DJ could play it out. It really does add to the song though, providing it a bit of purpose.

I downloaded this Hot Chip remix recently and didn’t realise until I saw a duplicate of it in my iTunes library that it was released in Dec. 2007, that’s how current it sounds! It’s a remix of this British singer named Tracey Thorn, whose vocals are quite haunting. The song sounds quite a bit like the stuff Aeroplane is making at the moment, which is why I thought it was new. Make sure you listen to it really loud and wait for the drop at around 2:20 it makes my spine tingle every time. So good.

Tracey Thorn – King’s Cross (Hot Chip Remix)

Speaking of Aeroplane, a new remix of their’s has just come out. This time they’ve remixed french pop star Sebastien Tellier’s already cool as track Kilometer. The first minute or so introduces the song with vocoders and synth stabs, but it’s not ’til after 1:20 that the song really gets into it. They bring in these huge synths, with the hint of that sound Regurgitator uses in Polyester Girl, I think. Anyway it’s an awesome track, I hope you enjoy it.

You’ve Been Living In A Bubble Made By People

Thinking back I can not understand why in the past I have started posts with an apology to all of you for not posting in such a long time. Maybe I felt the teeth of guilt chewing my conscience until my integrity as a blogger was left hanging by a thread. Or maybe I have never really understood anything I have ever said.

Why would I be sorry?

For now I will not be sorry instead I will be thankful to someone who truly deserves thanks and that is Adso for his first of hopefully many posts. I think you all should be very grateful to Adso as well.

Why would you be grateful?

In my defence for something I truly am not sorry about (i swear), at least when I do post it is with many hours thought as I listen to as many tracks as I can and realise some tracks are not worth posting.

Why would I waste money on stamps?

And you see I could post 1 track a day for 38 days or I could give all the tracks enough time to prove themselves and post 38 tracks in 1.

Aren’t you sick of these random questions?

I have changed my approach to suit the lazy downloader – which is all of you. See I have always been about economy when it comes to the incredible hard task of downloading so many songs. So just for you I have zipped each playlist, so instead of 38 “right click save as” you now only have to do 3. I suggest you throw each Playlist in order into Itunes or burn it onto a CD for the full effect of what I have always been trying to do here.

What have I been trying to do here?

I highly Recommend

Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane Remix ft. Au Revoir Simone)

Well it’s quite obvious to see that Aeroplane are currently my favourite producers with three appearances in the above playlists. They seem to have perfected the pop disco mix and have the perfect ear for choosing exactly the right song to remix. With help from Au Revoir Simone; they have turned Friendly Fires ‘Paris’ into a melodic journey into an elegant electronic space which can only be described with a smile. I just love the break down at 4:17 when they begin to use some deeper organs to launch the track into a screaming ending.

Grace Jones – William’s Blood (Aeroplane Remix)

A Derogatory Playlist PT IX has a down tempo feel for almost three quarters of the way. This is evidence of my changing dance music taste over the last 6 months. Once again Aeroplane fly into the ideal vocal track, this time using the immortal disco queen Grace Jones and her come back single ‘Williams Blood’. What happens during this track is amazing – an old school disco voice mixes with the new school disco beats which after a break builds into a distorted synth sample spew which I am sure Aeroplane must have stole from Soulwax.

Who Made Who – TV Friend (Hot Chip Remix)

I was lucky enough to see Who Made Who play live a couple of weeks ago and it was an absolutely brilliant set. Their new album is set for release in March and they have already launched a couple of singles. When I am looking forward to an album I always try to ignore the bands singles as I think it can ruin the album when your start listening to it from start to finish and already know 1 or 2 tracks way more then the others. This rule offcourse does not apply for remixes and Hot Chip as always have done an original job at turning this one into a 8 Min masterpiece. WMW have always concentrated on short and catchy lyrics and when they are mixed with the production expertise of someone like Hot Chip you are destined for a hit.

Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses (Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve Remix)

Well as anyone who knows anything knows – you never look past the Wizards Sleeve or should I say anything the Wizard Erol touches. Franz’s new album has definitely opened a whole new door for them in terms of fans and people who will be knocking on it to remix any number of their 20 new tracks. It is not a surprise that Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve does an impeccable job of keeping the track dark yet bouncy at the same time, which I think puts it just ahead of Franz’s other version ‘Feeling Kind Of Anxious’.

The Juan MacLean – One Day

I must say that this track got me extremely excited for The Juan MacLean’s new album which is coming out I think in April. It seems that Maclean has spent quite some time just doing DJ sets and the odd remix here and there so it was a pleasure to hear a song which has been produced for the band. I am hoping it gains enough popularity to see a tour come to Australia and hopefully bringing with it some DFA celebrities. The track itself is probably my favourite of the moment with its catchy sly verses which will set up a tent in your head until you listen to it again.

Kaiser Chiefs – Never Miss A Beat (Cut Copy Remix)

Whatever Cut copy touches usually turns into gold – but I must say they had a little help here with one of the most catchy songs of last year in Kaiser Chief’s ‘Never Miss A Beat’. I remember first hearing the original live in Belgium last year and knowing that it was going to be a simple hit – so with a little bit of Cut Copy magic it will/has turned into a dance floor favourite.

You will hear from me again but right now I am a little exhausted

O yeah – that’s why I was saying sorry.
