Last weekend then again this weekend we will find Justice for All

Last Weekend – Pomomofo

I was fortunate enough last weekend to get myself to Empire on Friday night to see an absolutely brilliant band. Unfortunately for them their booking agent obviously did not do their homework and the result of Indy Fever caused the dance floor to seem some what lonely. However the lack of crowd did not stop this three piece (Guitar, Synth, Drums) Indy, Electro, Punk Rock, Pop outfit from causing me to dance harder then I had probably ever danced before. The cause of this uncontrollable movement throughout my body was a punk band plugged into the electronic world of dance music. Pomomofo is the name and if I was not the only person on the dance floor then a mosh pit definitely would have been the game.

Late Night City Lights
Back At The Club

After listening to the above tracks you might be wondering what I am speaking about – The pop electro sounds of “Late Night City Lights” and “Back at the Club” are not at all indications of how hard this band would rock, just an indication of their commercial value and their diverse taste between Punk and Electro. At many stages during their set I found myself clutching at my chest feeling as if I had just run a marathon. During their more punky songs they had no need for a dance breakdown and it was non stop chaos. It was great to finally see a live electronic band bringing the guitar back with driving solos and power chords when the synth would take the lead.

Back at the Club (Cicada Mix)

The above two remixes are also very nice. Boy 8 Bit is a known for his quality takes on bands tracks and Pomomofo were lucky enough to secure his skills in reinventing the track “Back at the Club”. Cicada chose a different path when playing around with the same track, keeping the vocals and layering the song to make it more powerful and fit for a DJ set.

Do not miss these guys next time they come.

This Weekend – The Klaxons

This weekend I am going to be lucky enough to finally see the Klaxons live, not once but twice. First at their matinee all ages show then that night at their over 18 gig. I do not really have to go on about the Klaxons as they already have more then made it, defining the sound so many bands have been trying to fit into the last 2 years. I will simply leave you with a couple of tracks from their album and also what I believe are the best remixes of their tracks to date.

Download;
Klaxons – Atlantis to Interzone
Klaxons – It’s Not Over Yet
Klaxons – Gravities Rainbow (Soulwax Remix)
Klaxons – It’s not over yet (Gentlemen Drivers remix – Featuring Soko)
Klaxons – As Above So Below (Justice Remix)
Klaxons – Golden Skans (Switch Remix)

And Justice for Justice!

I think that Justice defined many of our 2006’s in terms of dance music, from hitting the outer shell of commercialism with a female voice telling us that we were her friends to the waters of the place where Jesus spent the first 30 years of his life. Highlights of last year for me were a couple of their remixes,

Scenario Rock – Skitzo Dancer (Justice Remix)

The lyrics and addictive bass of Skitzo Dancer had me hooked until the “Disco, Disco Disco!” loop was put on overkill by just about ever DJ with a set of CDJ’s.

Death From Above 1979 – Blood on our hands (Justice Remix)

This remix blew me away on first listen and I think it would have to be one of the best remixes I have ever heard. Justice’s take on Death From Above 1979 – Blood on our hands – Try to follow the bass and believe me it will take you for a ride.

You think it would be a perfect start to 2007 when it was announced that Justice would be playing Big day out!! O how naïve I was!! Note – Thall shall not ever get excited about a DJ because of his productions ever again!! I built my excitement up for about 3 months to watch two dudes mix other peoples songs terribly – the only saving grace was that they were good songs!

With the release of the cheese filled D.A.N.C.E as their first single off their debut album “Cross” I basically forgot all about them until they were announced for Parklife. I thought I would give the Justice “live” show a chance after listening to some very tight productions on the album. They put on a good show at Parklife and it was a welcome release to see them playing their own productions instead of trying to spin other people’s records.

So Justice for Justice I guess – Have a listen to MSTRKRFT melt the cheese off D.A.N.C.E and a couple of tracks off “Cross” that stand out in my memory of Parklife.

Justice – DVNO
Justice – Genesis

O and make sure you download this set and bring it with you everywhere – was produced by a couple of Sydney boys who have yet to do much else. First recorded set I have not only been able to sit and listen to but also enjoy in a long time. Highlights include Goose to Soulwax and a Kissy sellout Triple. Unfortunately as the name of the set suggest these boys forgot good old Justice!

OH NO! We forgot about Justice! – Mixed by Palpy and Cam Ran

Thanks to Pomomofo and Palpy for giving me permission to use their material – as for Justice and Klaxons – Thanks for not answering my calls you losers.

The Scientist of Grafton Primary

Grafton Primary

I was told about this duo from Sydney by a friend called Susie who happened to see them play a small gig at Rosies a month or so ago. I immediately checked them out on myspace and was over whelmed at how great they instantly sounded as the track “Relativity” blasted through my headphones one early morning. My excitement built with anticipation throughout the song as I heard the first lyrics come in and realised that this band was attempting to use relativity as a metaphor for love and hitting it right on the spot. However the awe of the lyrics would have to wait as the pounding synthesized bass exploded in the first melody.

Realitivity Lyrics

After listening to Relativity on repeat I thought I would give it a break and try the next track “Change”. With an ambient feel and slow melodic lyrics filling the intro, I thought for a second that the boys had gone soft and left the pounding kick drum and driving synths all to the theory of relativity – however I was soon proved wrong as the lyrics started and the letter L brought all the power back.

“L.O.V. Easy when you B.E.Y.O.U for me C.H.A.N.G.E will set you free, it’s true, if Y.O.U B.E.L.I.E.V.E”

Grafton Primary – Change

All tracks on the EP are superbly produced with all sounds complementing each other perfectly – topped off with meaningful lyrics fitted tightly to the rhythm.

Look out for Grafton Primary – hopefully they will be visiting Brisbane again soon. Please, please do your self a favor and buy their 6 track EP from a good record store or online at Itunes. I won’t spoil any more tracks but they are all as good as each other and the EP also includes a Tommy Trash remix of Relativity which was featured on Electro House Sessions.

The Scientists of Modern Music

The next band I would like to ramble on about is The Scientist of Modern Music two kids out of Hobart who would not be any older then 20. I first heard these guys last year when Midnight Juggernauts played their track “Technology Illiterate” during Home and Hosed on Triple J. I am still yet to hear them live and unfortunately was unable to go to Round and Round last year where they featured.

Download;
The Scientist of Modern Music – Technology Illiterate

These kids know how to use vocoders, synths and guitars. I believe their background comprises of Classical Piano and Rock Guitar, what could be a better combination to make thumping live electro!!

I had been hanging out for the release of their inaugural 7 Track EP so I could finally have wider access to a sound I had grown to love through only a couple of tracks. The biggest surprise when first listening to the EP was that Technology Illiterate would turn out not to be my favorite, with the first track EASY taking that title soon after the first few listens (it could just be because I played Technology Illirate to death, but you be the judge).

Download;
The Scientist of Modern Music – Easy

Their whole EP is quality dance music with suitable chord progressions, vocoders, running bass, euphoric break downs and the odd Guitar riff that will make you forget you’re even listening to dance music. I believe it will not be long before we see a lot more of these guys.

The last track I have posted Easy (Electric Ramjet Remix) is probably one of my favorite dance tracks of the moment – listen to the bass drop at 30 seconds into it and tell me that does not get you moving!! Electric Ramjet is actually Cal from the band and the boy can remix/produce!!! Don’t forget to buy their EP from Itunes or your local record store – you would be stupid if you didn’t. Enjoy.

Thanks to Ben from Grafton Primary and Cal from The Scientist of Modern Music for sending through the tracks and giving me permission to use them.

The Good Olive Days

I thought I would try to post a play list ever month or so just because I realised there has been a little bit of interest form my friends in this blog. I thought it would be good to keep you all up to date with what I am listening to so we can talk about how good this or that track is next time I see you. Not that I would only want to talk about music or any thing but we all just think in self interest don’t we? They will all be CD sized and I highly recommended you burn them to a CD or put them into a play list and listen to tracks in order. I have created a zip file where you can download all the tracks in one go (minus phantom pt II because I had to keep it under 100MB, but you should all already have that!) or if you just want to check a few out then just click through the links on each song.

The whole playlist Zipped (Not Including Phantom PT II).

A Derogatory Play list PT I

1. As I Moved On – (Run Jeremy Band/Trentemøller Remix) – Blue Foundation

2. Fed Up (Kissy Sell Outs Rules of Attraction Remix) – Remi Nicole
3. With Every Heartbeat (Punks Jump Up remix) – Robyn
4. Got Love To Kill (MSTRKRFT remix) – Juliette and The Licks
5. Yr Mangled Heart (Tiga Remix) – The Gossip
6. Things That Dreams Are Made Of – Kissy Sell-out vs The Human League
7. Hummer [McSleazy Remix] – Foals
8. Dr Love (Trizzy Remix) – The Bumblebeez
9. Shake a Fist – Hot Chip

10. Like Something 4 Porno (Armand Van Helden Mix) – Felix Da Housecat
11. Sudden Rush (The Twelves Remix) – Erlend Oye
12. ACDG (NixonPelletier Remix) – Yelle
13. Phantom Pt. II (Soulwax Nite Version) – Justice
(Buy them From Itunes)

The playlist almost starts off minimal with Trentemoller putting his touches onto a Blue Foundation track, it then moves onto some what poppy electro that ends up getting a little bit dirtier and heavier all the way through till the soulwax nite version of Phantom PT II makes it very maximum. Hope you enjoy.

Intimidating

If music is heard by one and that sound is translated to another, the word needs to express an action or state of being – the only means is via a verb – And in the words of Tim Ford

Intimidating (frightened into submission) – (Parklife – Track played by Busy P and then Justice after first playing Phantom Pt I and Pt II, I guess you could call it a Pt III)

Justice – Phantom Pt 11 (Soulwax Remix)
(Buy it From Itunes)

When the Nite is Rite and your about to go out – exit with this version (Parklife – Played after at Mikeys house as we were leaving to go out and it could be heard all the way down the street – Perfect exit music)

Soulwax – Another Excuse (Buy it From Itunes)

Lest we forget those who have come before us and continue to deliver – But always remember they were there… (Parklife – Played in-between MSTRKFRFT and Digitalism’s set as they were setting things up, Snapper would remember this one.)

LCD Soundsystem – Losing My Edge (Buy it From Itunes)

When the crowd grew up in the nineties this one will always get them clenching their fists (Played by Ajax before goose – perfect).

Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the name of (Mr Oizo Remix) (Buy it From Itunes)

If your sick of the perfect dental work your orthodontist did to your teeth when you were 14 why not turn to 1:42 of this track and let the synth grind your moulders. You have to wait for it!! Don’t get greedy and make sure its fucking loud.

Goose – British Mode (Buy it From Itunes)

And when every thing around you is high – Why not lower it with some BASS!! Try 14 Seconds into this track to get you bouncing like a bouncy ball you could never hold onto for more then a morning tea.

Digitalism – Digitalism in Cario (Buy it From Itunes)

All tracks above were inspired by some stage of my parklife day/night/morning – some of you were with me at these stages and will relate to what is above, the others need to put some headphones on, turn it up and understand. Photos courtesy of various friends – Chisolm, Aileen, Snapper, Lex, myself. Thanks every one for the awesome day.
